Hundreds of workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have been involved in a demonstration at the company’s head office, destroying company property in the process.
The workers, who massed up at the company’s headquarters in Accra on Monday October 3, 12016, are demanding the removal of the Managing Director, Robert Dwamena, indicating that his retirement was due, in anger, many pf the protestors broke doors during the demonstration.
The disgruntled workers were later asked to end the demonstration by police, who explained that the protest was illegal as no permit had been granted them for the demonstration.
The National Secretary of the Electricity Staff Union, Frank Adjetey Badu, said the MD, who turned 60 years on September 28, 2016 was supposed to proceed on retirement but was still at post.
They said, the MD had done his best during his productive years and there was nothing more he could do, thus, he should relinquish the position to another person.
Others also expressed displeasure over what they said was information they had picked up that the MD was seeking a year’s extension to his term.
