‘Lead New Era Of Honest Judges – President Charges CJ

The President, His Excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo has wafrned that people who fall foul of the laws will not find any shield in his government in the face of the law.

According to him, there cannot be growth and development when there is complete lawlessness from political party faithfuls, hence he charged the newly sworn-in Chief Justice to deliver justice at all times without fear or favour and without recourse to political affiliations.

The President gave the caution when he sworn-into office Justice Sophia Akuffo as the new Chief Justice of the Republic.

The president charged her to ensure social justice and uphold the rule of law at all times irrespective of who fall short of the law, indicating that even members of government or the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who break the law, must be made to dance to the tunes.

President Akufo-Addo has also challenged Justice Sophia Akuffo to effectively lead a new administration of honest judges; who possess integrity and have a sound knowledge of the law.

According to the President, the judiciary remains the bulwark of the country’s democracy and that much is expected of the Chief Justice to walk in the footsteps of the 12 Chief Justices before her, saying the Chief Justice is the “leading light of the court.”
President Akufo-Addo also stressed the fact that the time has come when judges will not deliver judgements without citing any authority or giving any reasons for the decisions they take.

The president charged her to ensure social justice and uphold the rule of law at all times irrespective of who fall short of the law, indicating that even members of government or the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who break the law, must be made to dance to the tunes.

The president also indicated that the swearing into office of the Chief Justice is in keeping with the provisions of the 1992 Constitution and a resolve to having a well-functioning democracy and the rule of law.
President Akufo-Addo also averred that, the Chief Justice must lead an agenda for the protection of the fundamental human rights and unity of the nation and nature the determination take the country into an era of freedom, justice, probity and accountability.
He said, the final judicial rights are invested in the judiciary, and not in any other organs of government, be it Presidency, Legislature of the Media, adding that the onerous responsibility to protect rights of citizens lies in the judiciary hence, the Chief Justice must be the arbiter in dispute between citizens and the State, and serve as a defense of liberties and rights of the people of Ghana.
In her acceptance speech, the new Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo expressed appreciation to the President and the people of Ghana, and to the former President Kufuor as well as Jerry John Rawlings for nurturing her to become such an asset to the country.
According to her, ‘I will also like to cease this opportunity to show my appreciation to Former President Rawlings who has nominated me to serve at the Supreme Court even at the time when I have not conceive the idea of having an opportunity at the bench, I also thank Former President John Agyekum Kufuor who has also appointed me to serve at the African Court on Human and Peoples Right; an opportunity which has enriched my experience. This experience I hope to bring to bear in my new office.’’
She also thanked former President John Dramani Mahama for his support for the African Court on Human and Peoples Right which ease her tenure as the President of that Court.
Justice Sophia Akuffo is the second female Chief Justice to be elected to that position, having taken over from Justice Georgina Theodora Wood who retired from office early this month.

She takes over from Justice Georgina Wood who served as the longest Chief Justice in Ghana’s history.
