The President of the Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA) and Chief Executive Officer of JOSPONG Group of Companies, Mr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, has appealed to members of the Association to endeavor to collect municipal solid waste in their assigned concession areas so as to ensure an effective waste management regime.

He gave the advice at the commissioning of the Achimota Waste Transfer Station in Accra yesterday.

According to him, several factors including inadequate landfills, waste treatment facilities and transfer stations have always been hampered the smooth running of their operations.

He noted that Zoomlion has therefore constructed the ultra-modern Waste Transfer Station to serve residents of Achimota and its environs, since according to him effective operations of collection, disposal and treatment which require the provision of landfills or waste treatment facilities and transfer stations.

According to him, critical to our city’s municipal solid waste management is the availability of treatment sites and pointed out that, “the sheer distances of these sites from the national capital worsened by heavy vehicular congestion have brought enormous challenges to our members in their bid to effectively and efficiently convey waste from the city Centre to these landfill sites.”

He however indicated that the environmentally friendly facility will serve as a temporary site for municipal solid waste treatment to improve collection of waste from households in Achimota and its surrounding communities.

The transfer station has the capacity to hold at least 1,200 tons of garbage per day; which means that over 100 waste trucks of various sizes can dump at the facility daily.

The Achimota Transfer Station is meant for waste collectors in Achimota and its environs and will therefore complement the 1,300 tons capacity Teshie Transfer Station, which has been provided by Zoompak, a subsidiary of Zoomlion Ghana Limited for waste contractors operating in and around Teshie.

The commissioning of the Achimota Waste Transfer Station, brings to three the total number of waste transfers stations which have been constructed by Zoomlion Ghana Limited since 2014 including Teshie and Kokomlemle.

Zoomlion Ghana Limited since its inception in 2006 has consistently introduced modern technologies in waste management. The company which initially started with a manual tricycle waste collection system has evolved over the years through its research, innovation and development unit to introduce the waste transfer station.

Zoomlion Ghana Limited and its subsidiary companies- Accra Compost and Recycling Plant, Universal Plastic Products and Recycling, Sewerage Systems Ghana Limited, Zoomlion Domestic and Zoompak have provided an integrated waste management solution where waste collected are recycled into compost, waste bins, bin liners and other useful products.

Mr. Agyepong said, “As ESPA members, the plant will improve our turn-around time, reduce maintenance cost of our vehicles as they will be travelling shorter distances, reduce fuel cost and driver fatigue. It will also ensure speedy collection and haulage of waste from the city, and begin the cleanest city agenda as envisioned by our government.”

Mr. Siaw-Agyepong assured the management of Zoompak of his full support in making judicious use of the facility and also assured government of the company’s continuous resolve to support its efforts in making Accra the cleanest city in Africa.

“We believe that the vision is achievable and more facilities such as the Achimota Transfer Station would be needed in strategic locations to drive its fulfilment.”

Also in his address, the Managing Director of Zoompak Mr. Yuksel Unal lauded Zoomlion Group of Companies for bringing another innovation in the management of solid waste by constructing such an ultra-modern Waste Transfer Station to serve residents of Achimota and its environs.

He revealed that the commissioning of the Achimota waste transfer station brings to three the total number of waste transfers stations which have been constructed by Zoomlion Ghana Limited since 2014. These are sited at Teshie, Kokomlemle and Achimota.

Mr. Yuksel Unal also stressed that, the long hours spent in traffic to dispose waste at landfill sites which are located far from the city continue to thwart efforts by waste management companies to efficiently transport waste from point of generation to final disposal sites.

“…the impact of this challenge has been glaring with spillover and unsanitary sites in parts of the city,” he said.

He added that waste transfer stations provide a reduced cost of fuel, extends the useful life of vehicle tyres, reduce vehicle maintenance cost, increases in efficiency of personnel operations among others which are as a result of shorter distances to final disposal sites.

“The Solid Waste Transfer station we are commissioning today has a capacity of 2,000 Tones transfer capacity daily.  Solid waste offload platform has been created with five (5) bunkers. Four (4) of them are for waste trucks and one (1) is for tricycles. The station has been equipped with the highest full automation technology in the world.”

He expressed appreciation to all the people who have contributed to the establishment of Achimota Zoompak Solid Waste Transfer Station project and to all the staff of Campak and Jospong Group of Companies.

The facility has three compaction trailers of which one can receive an average of 2,000 tons of waste and each trailer can absorb about ten waste compaction trucks making about 100 waste trucks dumping at our facility in a day.

It also has a weighing bridge with an automated system to calculate the weight of waste dumped by each truck whilst odor from the plant is diminished by the air tight and leakage proof nature of the transfer trailers.

The transfer station innovation among other waste management solutions being provided by the Zoomlion Group is geared towards making our city clean.
